This little screech owl was one of over 130 owls cared for last year at the center.

It was found on December 19th after being hit by a car on Rte. 113 and brought to the Center for Wildlife. The initial exam found no fractures; it had some abrasions on its feet and was suffering from head trauma. The eyes were examined and had some minor damage from the impact. The owl was started on fluids to rehydrate and given some pain and anti-inflammatory medicine.  The bird was checked for parasites and given supportive care until it was ready to go into an outdoor flight cage. From there we made sure that it was flying strong and able to navigate and find food. After 26 days in care it was ready to be released. We try to release animals back to their original territory especially non migratory species that have established home ranges. Hit by car is one of the leading causes of admissions for animals to the center. The habitat fragmentation caused by roads creates a wonderful edge habitat for rodents and an open hunting area for predators. Unfortunately when the rodents run across the open road the owls chase them and end up getting hit.

The above video is the screech owl being released to the area in which it was found.

Center for Wildlife is located in Cape Neddick, Maine and has been in operation for almost 40 years. Our mission is to cultivate and strengthen relationships between humans, wildlife, and the environment resulting in a healthier more sustainable community. We work towards this mission through education and conservation medicine. Last year our education team presented over 500 programs and our clinic team cared for just over 2,400 wild mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
